Alvin played his first soccer on Farrell's meadow. He had an older brother, Bob, who played in goal and he wanted to be like him. He certainly proved to everyone that he was a pretty good goaltender. He helped his Minor Soccer teams win a number of Provincial titles.

Bob Slaney was in goal when Alvin broke in at the senior level, which forced him to watch a number of games from the bench. Anytime he was called upon to play, Bob Slaney was his greatest supporter. Bob taught him to always challenge the shooter and nobody did it with more flair than Alvin. Sometimes when it got boring in goal, with very few shots, he would put on a show by making a spectacular save out of an ordinary shot.

In 1973, the coaching staff of the Newfoundland Summer Games recognized his talent and he was named to the Canada Games squad.

Upon returning to the senior Laurentians Bob Slaney was still there and another young and up and coming goalie, Al Slaney, was arriving on the scene. Any Challenge Cup team would have given anything to have him in their net but Alvin was a true blue Laurentian and if he had to back up another goalie he would do so with pride.

He played from 1970 to 1980 and helped St. Lawrence on a number of occasions to Provincial Challenge Cup Championships after the starting goalkeeper got injured. He was a very agile goalie who performed flawlessly when called upon to do so.
